Active fighting between the Russian and the Ukrainian armed forces took place on the outskirts of Irpin, Ukraine (February - March 2022). The city got a lot of devastating destruction, and the Children's & Youth sports school was no exception. "Steel Freedom" competition offered to develop a project-concept of a new building within the development site because the existing school will be completely dismantled.

Location

After visiting the site and analyzing the main pedestrian routes, we formed the basic idea of the project. Due to the preservation of the H-shaped form of the building and the optimal use of planning solutions, it was possible to increase the technical and economic indicators of the new building and create recreational areas within the existing contour. We moved the main entrance from the western side of the building to the central part, then determined the number of floors.

Next, the whole volume was divided into functional blocks and the main centers of attraction for visitors and employees were decided. The block with the main sports hall was moved closer to the outdoor sports fields, which optimized the flow of students and separated the loud space from the quiet rooms.
After that, we determined the main vertical communications and continued work with the school's shape and landscaping.

Morphogenesis

We offer to use orange color on the school's territory to simplify the orientation of the sports complex. These accents emphasize the directions to the main entrances, this color will also be used in interior. There are bicycle parking and a cafe terrace near the main entrance. The courtyard provides an area for active rest and recreation, which is fenced off from the garages by greenery. The backyard has also a small utility area with access to the road.

Masterplan

The facades are designed in light colors with orange accents. They are decorated with "Metipol" facade panels of different colors. The main feature are the open stairs that lead from the street to the tribunes on the second floor and provide a certain dynamism to the facade. Perforated panels with sports-themed images are used for sun protection, they also ensure a certain intimacy of the changing rooms.

4 evacuation stairwells lead to the underground floor, the main one of which is located on the main facade. Part of the underground floor is dedicated to technical premises, a dressing room, a wrestling hall and the gym for the adult category of visitors. If it is necessary, the wrestling hall can be used as a shelter during an air raid.

Thanks to the H-shaped form, the school was divided into different functional blocks.

Large sports and gymnastics halls are placed on the first floor. A table tennis club and cafe are located in the social and entertainment area. Walls for a climbing wall are given on the backyard and in the main hall, both are for active recreation and for professional training with routes of different difficulty.

An internal central staircase leads to the premises of the second floor: an anteroom, a conference room and a chess club. While heading to the tribunes of the main sports hall, we can watch the game through a glass partition, or sit down on the chairs and continue our rest there.
The left block was also given over to administrative premises, which are separated by a wall from the public space.

The frame of the building was constructed from metal structures, which allowed to make large halls and bring out consoles. The bomb shelter and the underground floor are designed from a monolithic reinforced concrete frame to increase the strength of the storage. Energy-efficient materials were also used to reduce heat consumption.
